On May 15, 2018, Lu Yunquan, Director of the Haidian District Education Committee, Zhao Xun, Deputy Director of the Urban Construction and Environmental Protection Committee under the Standing Committee of Haidian District People’s Congress, Tu Yongyong, Deputy Director of the Haidian District Education Committee, Mo Hongtao, Deputy Director of the Educational, Scientific, Cultural, Health, and Sports Office under the Standing Committee of Haidian District People’s Congress, Lin Zhijun, Deputy Director of the Urban Construction and Environmental Protection Office under the Standing Committee of Haidian District People’s Congress, Wu Jing, Director of the Haidian District Education Committee Office, and Jiao Dongqin, Director of the Reform and Development Office of the Haidian District Education Committee, inspected Beijing Kaiwen Academy (KWA).

Director Lu and his team inspected KWA’s teaching buildings, stadiums, libraries, dormitories, and cafeterias. Later, a seminar was held on a mid-lake island at KWA. At the seminar, KWA Executive Principal Zhou Zhaoyu and Academic Principal Wang Shi gave work reports on behalf of the school. While listening to the reports, Director Lu discussed key issues with the attendees and gave corresponding instructions.

Director Lu was very interested in how KWA has integrated Chinese and Western educational concepts in curricula, teaching content, featured courses, standardized examinations, clubs, residential students’ study management, etc. He and the participants discussed these issues in depth.

Director Lu spoke highly of KWA’s Chinese and Western teaching models, teachers’ and students’ styles, campus culture, campus environment, facilities, etc. He pointed out that international schools have a rosy future. Since there are only a small number of specialized international schools in Haidian District, the District is in great need of schools like KWA that can provide high quality international education. KWA is familiar with China’s domestic educational concepts. KWA has striven to bring the school in line with international standards. KWA has rich high-end international quality education resources. All this indicates that KWA has the conditions and foundation to provide elite education. For example, KWA’s physical education model, which has helped introduce the U.S. Major League Baseball (MLB), the U.K. Manchester City Football Club, China Open, and other high-end international club education resources into KWA classrooms, can serve as a good example for Haidian District’s education. Director Lu also suggested that the Haidian Education Committee provide similar high-end educational resources to all public schools within its jurisdiction in the future to improve these schools’ educational and teaching levels.

He also suggested that KWA pay attention to China’s standardized examination policy and further explore the curriculum content that combines Chinese and Western elements, to lay a solid foundation for students to learn traditional Chinese culture and high-level international courses. He expressed his hope that KWA will fully use its resource advantages to undertake more inter-school exchange activities and provide more opportunities for public and private schools to learn from each other. Director Lu also emphasized that KWA should position itself as a base to provide future talented people for the Zhongguancun High-tech Zone. KWA should gradually build China’s elite education model and contribute to attracting talented people from all over the world to Haidian District, Beijing.

At the end of the meeting, KWA Principal Zhou said that KWA’s development cannot be separated from the Education Committee’s leadership and support. The school will adhere to bilingual education and its educational philosophy that places equal emphasis on arts and science in an effort to cultivate talented people with home-country feelings and international perspectives. At the same time, KWA hopes that the Education Committee will organize more schools to come to KWA for exchanges, so that KWA can contribute to the development of high-quality international education in Haidian District.
