With the international partners, Kaiwen students take samples of the soil, the lake and the air from the campus and analyze the results, write reports, put forward personal views and make their voice heard. It is remarkable for them to speak for the environment even if their voice is small.
On June 13th, The Voices of Youth-International Youth Summit were held at Beijing Haidian Kaiwen Academy, the theme of which is climate change: impacts and solutions. 25 students from The Out of Door Academy (ODA), Evangelical Christian School (ECS) and Beijing Haidian Kaiwen Academy (KWA) have participated in the summit.

Three workshops with different subjects were formed. The subjects are energy management, alternative sources of energy, politics and economics of energy. Students from three schools discussed new sustainable life styles under the circumstance of climate change and put forward their personal opinions.

Academic Principal of Kaiwen Academy, Wang Shi extended a warm welcome to all the participants of the summit on behalf all the faculty and students of KWA and expressed his blessings to the summit.
The summit has invited two professionals in climate change:Gao Yun andTor Zipkin. Gao Yun is the Deputy Director of the Department of Technology and Climate change, China Meteorological Administration. Tor Zipkin is an energy specialist. And they provided their professional opinions about students’ performance.
At the beginning of the summit, students from three schools introduced the environment issues in local areas. During the processing discussion, students put forward their views on the sustainable development of environment.

A student from Kaiwen Academy proposed that through better efficiency and cleaning technologies, carbon based fuels can be managed and the effects of pollution and climate change can be mitigated. Another student from ODA promoted new forms of energy and the effects of climate change can be eliminated through a wide variety of sources and technologies.

Gao Yun, Deputy Director of the Department of Technology and Climate change, China Meteorological Administration
Ms. Gao has participated in the discussion. Ms. Gao holds a Ph.D. degree in Climate Sciences and has long been responsible for the work of climate change in China Meteorological Administration and the organization work in Assessment and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). She talked about the scientific reasons for climate change from Hollywood movies, and made a vivid speech on climate change for students.
Ms. Gao was surprised that the students had such a profound understanding of climate change and energy management at a young age. KWA is visionary to hold such activities, and students can improve their professional competence and cultivate a sense of social responsibility and honor which is necessary for future development.

Mr. Zipkin is an energy specialist and has studied environmental science in UCLA and has made great contributions to sustainable development in Northern Europe. Mr. Zipkin was interested in students’view on new energy. He pointed out that global warming was undoubted and the development of renewable energy was imminent. The future of environment was connected with every student. He encouraged students to start from little things around, pay attention to climate change and contribute to the sustainable development of human beings.
ODA and ECS, that have participated in the summit is the sister schools of Beijing Haidian Kaiwen Academy. During winter vacation in 2017, grade 6 to grade 10 students from KWA have participated in the Immersion Program and have visited these two schools and spent 21 days with the local students. The students from these two schools studied and lived with KWA students. This summit can strengthen the exchange and enhance the friendship with classmates.

Dylan Dennehy, Principal of ODA said, students can not only learn something and make friends during this trip, but also can experience different cultures, which is quite meaningful. Tim from KWA also believed that this summit provided a opportunity for students to communicate with international students and develop a international and forward-looking perspective.
